What are essential oils? I really didn't know when my now oils teacher handed me a purse filled with them. I'd grown up with a few around the house but didn't know much about them except that Mom pulled them out when we were sick.

Essential oils are simply the lifeblood of a plant. They are more potent than a dried herb and produce fast, effective results. Many oil companies will poorly harvest plants to obtain oils quickly and cheaply. Many are also diluted with carriers and synthetic additives (often perfumes) to make them cheaper. These oils do not have health-benefiting, therapeutic-grade quality. These oils may smell like lavender, oregano, peppermint, etc., but have zero health benefits. See, it's not just the smell you're after. Or the word 'organic'.

Unfortunately, like a lot of other things, 'organic' is not a reliable term. Organic can mean a lot of different things and does not determine the purity of an oil. So watch you don't fall into the trap of synthetic, organic essential oils -- organically grown plants with synthetic additives in the oil.

Why do we use essential oils? Because they're natural and God-given, they're safe, and incredibly effective. Read on.

Young Living's oils are extracted through a very careful and supervised steam distillation or cold pressing. They are powerful, effective, and the purest essential oils on the market. David Stewart writes that "the vast majority of essential oils (over 95%) are produced for flavour and fragrance and do not fulfil therapeutic standards." But Young Living's oils do.

"Young Living has its own standard, higher than the industry, of what are acceptable levels for each oil, if and oil does not meet or exceed those standards then it is rejects. About 80% of oils sent to YL are rejected and the supplier will then go and sell them to another company in the marketplace. If an oil that YL produced does not meet its standards that oil is dumped. How many other suppliers would do the same?" (via)

Gary Young is devoted to the production of safe and pure essential oils. I love this article describing the tragic, painful, and life-changing event that led him to the decade-plus of travel, study, and research that became Young Living Essential Oils.

Some people claim they are allergic or sensitive to essential oils because they've suffered breakouts or "allergic reactions". More likely, that breakout is most likely linked to a synthetic additive or other carrier used to dilute and cheapen the oil. I have encountered people that have claimed to be allergic to certain spices and smells and have had no negative reactions to YL oils.

If you've ever read the back of the oils at your local health food store, typically labelled "aromatherapy", there will be a red-flag: "Do not ingest" "Do not use on children or pets" "Not for internal use".
This is a horrible thing-- that these oils have been tampered with to the point of not even being safe for human consumption. If you're breathing it in, rubbing it on your skin, ingesting it, expecting results, you want this to be food-grade.
Have I mentioned we cook and bake with our Young Living oils? We even drink them in water. All of YL's oils are safe for human-consumption.

Yes, Young Living oils are the priciest on the market but they are of the highest standard on the market. And you do get what you pay for.
doTERRA is possibly the second most known oil company out there. Unfortunately, because of dishonest business practices and lawsuits, coupled with shady oil-producing methods, we cannot support them. You can read more here.

Many people ask me how my family is so healthy, how we kick colds so quickly (or don't get them in the first place). My answer is unequivocal-- Young Living essential oils, herbal remedies, and real whole foods. It's not a fad, or something we do when we can afford, it's a lifestyle we live by.
